Fictional Case Study – SaltyPink: Ethical Fashion with AI-driven Mission
Introduction: I’ve wanted to create a high-fashion video for a while. They’re mesmerizing, filled with symbolism and contextual messaging. The only challenge is that they usually require extremely high production value and can be difficult to shoot. So who knows when I’d get the opportunity—if not for AI video generation! Once I got my hands on it, I thought, why not harness its powers to create a video for a brand I’d be interested in working with? I envisioned something environmentally conscious, sustainable, and humane. Thus, I created SaltyPink.
As I worked on my fictional brand campaign and let my imagination flow, I realized that AI has the power to help us envision ideas, provide a tangible view of progress, and offer a more humane way to create wildlife imagery. The videos are incredibly impactful for future reimagining. You’ll see the video linked in the post below, but I encourage you to read the case study as well. Yes, I created one too! (Nerd alert!). It includes my thought process and insights into the concepts that shaped the final result.
SaltyPink - A Fashion Brand with a Mission
SaltyPink is an innovative fictional brand that blends ethical fashion with AI-driven environmental storytelling. The brand represents a unique fusion of style and sustainability, prioritizing responsible materials, humane practices, and protection of wildlife. Every purchase from SaltyPink contributes to animal rights initiatives, underscoring the brand's commitment to ethical consumerism.
Mission and Messaging: Fashion with Purpose
Going beyond ethical materials, SaltyPink uses each campaign to raise awareness about environmental protection and humane animal treatment. The brand’s motto, “The colors you will only see in the wild,” emphasizes its dedication to preserving nature’s rare beauty. Pink, a rare color in the natural world, symbolizes the delicacy and vibrancy of nature we must protect. Through this lens, humans almost blend with wild environments, embracing a “wild and rare beauty.”
Imagery and Design Choices
SaltyPink specializes in sustainable blazers and compostable plastic sunglasses, allowing fashion lovers to invest in pieces that respect the planet. The campaign imagery blends humans and nature, aiming to spark conversations on wildlife preservation and ethical design. I intentionally create the ambiguity between seeing humans and animals as enjoying the environment they are in, with them looking seemingly endangered by pollution or urban life. You can see images of chemical pink next to the visions of the rare wildlife pink to reflect on how we can find the beauty we seek in more sustainable practices.
The AI Advantage: Rethinking Wildlife in Fashion
An important question arises with SaltyPink’s mission: can AI transform how we interact with wildlife and environmental visuals in fashion? By generating animal-inspired visuals through AI, SaltyPink avoids the ethical dilemmas of traditional wildlife usage in media. This approach hints at a future where technology allows fashion brands to protect and respect natural habitats while creating impactful storytelling.
Environmental Case Studies in Filmmaking
SaltyPink’s environmental ethos is further supported by real-world cases where media production has impacted sensitive ecosystems. For instance, the filming of Mad Max: Fury Road in Namibia reportedly resulted in significant environmental damage to ancient, pristine landscapes. Similar incidents have occurred in other productions, such as Pirates of the Caribbean, where filming practices reportedly affected local ecosystems.
"A single soundstage can lead to 4,000 hectares of deforestation, according to research from UCLA. This is due to the use of 'lauan', a lightweight plywood which is easy to work with, but often unsustainably harvested from rainforests". ("LIGHTS, CAMERA…ACTION FOR NATURE?", 2021)
The Future of Ethical Media: AI as a Solution
SaltyPink suggests a path forward: imagine using AI to create stunning, lifelike wildlife imagery without disturbing ecosystems. Through responsible technology, brands like SaltyPink could transform fashion, pushing industries toward more ethical, sustainable practices.
